The Checkfront alternative built for hunting outfitters and lodges

Checkfront is a capable general booking engine. HuntReserve is built for the hunt itself: approve clients before they book, scan every license, sign releases with no signal, file tags after the harvest, and put a marketing team behind your own website. Every Checkfront fact here comes from their own site.

We call you, show you HuntReserve with your own hunts, and set you up.

The short answer

What is the best Checkfront alternative for hunting outfitters?

For hunting outfitters and lodges, the best Checkfront alternative adds the hunt work a general booking engine leaves out: client approval, license scans, harvest tags, offline waivers and marketing. HuntReserve is booking, waiver, payment and marketing software for hunting outfitters, guides, lodges and fishing charters, with a marketing team built in.

The verdict

Pick HuntReserve if you want outfitter tools and marketing for a flat monthly price. Checkfront is a general booking engine for tours, rentals and lodging at $99 a month plus a 3% online booking fee; HuntReserve adds approve-before-book, license scans, tags and harvest reports, Camp Mode, a custom website and, from Full Draw, a marketing team with a 0% booking fee.

Ownership

Your brand, your Stripe, your customers

Your brand

Hunters book on your website, on your own domain, under your name. Every page we write and every review we earn builds your outfit, not a platform's.

Your Stripe

Deposits, balances and refunds go straight into your own Stripe account. Card processing is Stripe's standard rate, and you decide who covers it.

Your customers

Your hunters, waivers, licenses and booking history live in your own HuntReserve account. Your reviews and repeat business build your brand, not ours.

Why outfitters switch

Checkfront and HuntReserve overlap more than most: both book rooms, both take deposits, both have waivers. Here's where they part ways for a hunting outfit, and what the move costs.

Why do hunting outfitters look for a Checkfront alternative?

Because Checkfront is built to serve everyone, and a hunting outfit has jobs nobody else has. Checkfront is a general booking engine for tours, activities, rentals and lodging, and its site covers a lot of ground: booking widgets for any website, built-in waivers, deposits, room booking, QuickBooks Online and connections to travel resellers. We didn't find a hunting or fishing page on their site.

What an outfitter adds on top of that is the hunt itself. You screen clients for private ground. You need a license from every shooter and you want to know it's the right person. Camp has no signal. After the harvest there are tags and a state report. And somebody has to fill next season. Those are the gaps any Checkfront alternative needs to fill for an outfitter.

What does a Checkfront alternative cost compared with Checkfront?

Checkfront publishes $99 a month plus a 3% online booking fee, which they note may vary by region and currency. You can absorb that fee or pass it to your guests, and offline bookings carry no fee. HuntReserve plans are $159, $329 or $899 monthly; Opening Day's 2% booking fee is billed to you, and Full Draw and Trophy Class have none.

The worked example in the cost table below runs $100,000 of online bookings through both price lists. Using the same published numbers you can find your own crossover point:

  • Opening Day ($1,908 a year plus 2%) costs less than Checkfront's list price ($1,188 a year plus 3%) once online bookings pass about $72,000 a year
  • Full Draw ($3,948 a year, 0% booking fee) costs less once online bookings pass about $92,000 a year, and it includes a marketing team
  • Below those numbers, Checkfront's published price is lower on software alone

Two caveats keep this fair, whichever Checkfront alternative you're weighing. If you pass Checkfront's 3% on to guests, your own cost drops but your client's total goes up. And card processing is extra with both; with HuntReserve it's Stripe's posted rates inside your own Stripe.

Checkfront books rooms and signs waivers. What's different at a hunting lodge?

The details. Both systems book rooms, but HuntReserve books a room and a hunt on one reservation, with nightly capacity for each unit and a daily limit for each hunt type, so a lodge with spare beds still can't oversell a field that holds eight guns.

Both have waivers for kids, but they work differently. Checkfront's waiver has a minor's section where an adult fills in information for one or more minors. HuntReserve has a parent or guardian co-sign the minor's own form. Checkfront lists a group link so everyone in a party signs; HuntReserve's party link also has each person upload a license, which AI reads and compares against whoever signed the release.

And HuntReserve lets you approve a client before he can book at all. Inquiries land on a board, you choose, and only the hunters you approve receive a booking code. That step isn't listed on Checkfront's site.

What happens after the harvest with a Checkfront alternative?

The outfit keeps working after checkout, and so should the software. Log a harvest in HuntReserve and HuntReserve drafts the state report for you, showing how many days remain, so submitting it is a copy-and-paste job you do yourself. The tag register shows which tags are yours, which are the client's, and which bird or buck each one went on.

Meat, hides and mounts move through the processing tracker, and the hunter can check a status page instead of calling you. The Harvest Log adds up season totals and success rates by guide and by property. Checkfront lists none of these, which is fair: they aren't building for hunters.

Does a Checkfront alternative handle waivers at a camp with no signal?

HuntReserve's Camp Mode was made for it. Open it once on a tablet while you're connected, and it keeps taking releases, guardian signatures and license photos with no service at all, then uploads everything when the signal returns.

Checkfront lists a waiver kiosk as a public online page or QR code and an iOS and Android app for bookings and check-in. Signing releases offline isn't mentioned there. If your camp is an hour past the last bar of signal, that's worth asking about either way.

Do you get a website and marketing with this Checkfront alternative?

Yes, and that's the biggest practical difference. Checkfront gives you a hosted booking page and widgets to embed in your site; a website build isn't listed. Every HuntReserve plan includes a custom website on your own domain, from 5 pages on Opening Day to 25 on Trophy Class.

Full Draw and Trophy Class also put our marketing team to work for you: local SEO, visibility in AI search, Google and Meta ads, fresh content each month and Google Business Profile management. Checkfront connects you to resellers such as Viator, GetYourGuide and Google Things to do. HuntReserve builds direct demand instead, so the hunter who finds you this year books you directly next year too. If reseller bookings are a big part of your business, Checkfront may suit you better; for a hunting outfit or lodge, HuntReserve is the Checkfront alternative made for the job. See how the same account covers every kind of outfit.

Questions

Switching from Checkfront

How much does Checkfront cost?

Checkfront's pricing page lists $99 a month plus a 3% online booking fee, and notes that pricing may vary by region and currency. You can absorb the 3% or pass it to guests, and offline bookings carry no fee.

Can I move from Checkfront to HuntReserve mid-season?

Yes. Our team configures your hunts, rooms, extras, release and Stripe on a call, and your client records come across too. Reservations you've already taken can finish in Checkfront while new bookings start on HuntReserve the day your Book button switches over.

Will guests see a booking fee with this Checkfront alternative?

Not from HuntReserve. Full Draw and Trophy Class have no booking fee, and Opening Day's 2% is billed to you on your statement rather than added to the guest's total. Card processing is Stripe's rate, and you decide who covers it.

What happens to my Viator and GetYourGuide connections?

They don't carry over. There's no reseller or travel-agency connection in HuntReserve; new clients reach you through your website, search, AI assistants and paid campaigns. If those channels bring in many of your guests, tell us on the call and we'll weigh it with you.

Can I keep my own waiver wording?

Yes. Upload your waiver as it reads today. Hunters sign it on screen, get an emailed copy, and minors sign with a parent or guardian co-signing. Your lawyer's language stays your lawyer's language.

Do I keep QuickBooks if I move to a Checkfront alternative?

Yes. Both connect to QuickBooks Online. HuntReserve posts your bookkeeping entries as they happen, and adds a profit and loss view by month and by hunt inside the app.

Do my staff need the Checkfront app or another app?

No app at all. Any phone browser runs HuntReserve. Guides see their own hunts, managers see the money, and Camp Mode runs on any tablet you already own.

Is a Checkfront alternative worth it for a small lodge?

It depends on your volume. Below roughly $72,000 of online bookings a year, Checkfront's published price is lower on software alone. Above it, or if you want a website and marketing included, HuntReserve usually comes out ahead. Talk to us with last year's totals and we'll do the math together.
